Accommodation at the Semmelweis
Leo: ‘The university has seven dorms with about 900 students. They're decent places to live and learn, fostering a collaborative environment. But you've got to be on your toes, applications for these limited spots open in August. The catch? The Dormitory Committee doesn't decide until the same month, which can be tricky if you need a Hungarian visa. Not up for the dorm life? The 8th and 9th districts in Budapest have off-campus options that are central and pretty convenient. Expect to shell out from 300 Euros for a room and about 500 Euros for a studio. Semmelweis Housing is a rental agency tied with the university that can help you find a place. I found my apartment on facebook. I share it with three other med students, and it works out pretty well for us.’
Student Life in Budapest as a Student at Semmelweis university
Leo, 20: ‘Studying at Semmelweis University in Budapest? It's real, hard work! It's got a international crowd, and it's also a big research institution, so you bet there's a lot to learn. And while the city of Budapest has its own unique vibe, don't expect a leisurely study abroad. We're here to dig deep into medicine, and that's exactly what we do.’
‘Budapest is an old city with plenty of historic architecture. There's a ton of places to eat, cool bars, and cafes around. It's known for its nightlife and even makes it into the top 20 party cities. There's this big event, the Sziget Festival,, which draws crowds. Budapest also is in the Top 20 of best party cities, here. Also, there are a lot of natural springs and fountains, over 100 in fact. Some of these are in old buildings turned into thermal baths - a cool spot to unwind. I think for students from around the world, Budapest is an interesting place.’
