Medicine program at Semmelweis University
  • Year 1: The first-year curriculum covers core basics like Medical Chemistry, Cell Science, Macroscopic Anatomy, Medical Biophysics, Medical Sociology, Medical Communication, and Medical Terminology. Additionally, students have practical training in First Aid, Hungarian Medical Terminology, Physical Education (PE), and conclude the year with summer nursing practice.
  • Year 2: Courses intensify in the second year with deeper dives into Anatomy, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Physiology, and Biophysics. Introduction to Patient Care and Medical Informatics are introduced. Students continue with Hungarian Medical Terminology and PE, and end with another practical session.
  • Year 3: Year 3 gets more specialized with Pathophysiology, Microbiology, Immunology, Genetics, and Genomics. It also introduces students to Basic Surgical Techniques and Medical Aspects of Disaster Preparedness. Summer practice involves Internal Medicine.
  • Year 4: Focus areas of the fourth year include Internal Medicine, Surgery, Traumatology, Orthopedics, Otorhinolaryngology, Dermatology, Oral Surgery, Dentistry, Laboratory Medicine, Pulmonology, Thoracic Surgery, Oncology, and Emergency Medicine. The summer practice is dedicated to Surgery.
  • Year 5: The penultimate year covers courses like Forensic Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Urology, Anesthesiology, Intensive Therapy, Ophthalmology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Psychiatry, Psychotherapy, and Sports Medicine. This year also involves a fair amount of clinical practices.
  • Year 6: The final year has two options - a NEW or OLD curriculum. Both curriculums emphasize clinical practice across various medical specializations, including Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics, Gynecology, Psychiatry, and Neurology. The NEW curriculum includes an elective and Thesis work. The OLD curriculum offers a deeper dive into some subjects like Infectology and Family Medicine within Internal Medicine, Vascular Surgery, and Traumatology within Surgery.

Admission Process for Semmelweis University in Hungary

Document Requirements for MU Semmelweis Admission
Prepare to submit the following documents: your high school Matriculation Certificate (final submission by August 21, 2024, if not yet available), an English Resume, a Motivation Letter, a copy of your passport (or ID for Schengen Area citizens), and a recent passport-sized photo. Admission Fees, Deposit, and Medical Certification
  • Upon initiating your application, you'll need to pay the $350 Admission Procedure Fee.
  • Upon successful admission, deposit $2,000 within 14 days—this amount gets deducted from your first semester's tuition. An additional $220 enrollment fee is due with the tuition fee.

Semmelweis Entrance Exam
Regular entrance exams are held weekly March-June. All specific dates, times, and exam details are shared once the application is submitted via the SEMAPHOR online application system. Written exam Entrance exams cover crucial scientific fields such as Evolution, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Physiology, and Genetics. Knowledge of English terminology in these areas is required. Recommended textbooks for preparation include Ebbing-Gammon: General Chemistry, Stoker: General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry, Solomon-Martin-Martin-Berg: Biology, and Lodish: Molecular Cell Biology. You have to answer 20 Multiple-choice questions of each subject:

  • Medical Chemistry
  • General English
  • Biomedical English
You have 20 minutes for each subject.
Oral exam
The personal interview focuses on professional attitude, affinity towards medical sciences, English communication skills, and knowledge of the above disciplines. In-person is the standard interview format, but Zoom might be used, depending on circumstances.
